Fellowships

The McNeil Center offers several pre-doctoral dissertation fellowships each year; most are for a term of nine months, beginning 1 September. Advanced graduate students from any PhD-granting institution who are in the dissertation research or writing stage are eligible to compete for these fellowships, which are open to scholars in any discipline for projects focusing on North America and the Caribbean before 1850. Proposals reliant on research in Philadelphia-area archives and libraries are especially welcome. For details on fellowships and application instructions, click here. The submission deadline for dissertation fellowship applications is typically in January or February of each year.

The Center also offers a two-year Barra Postdoctoral Fellowship, to recent recipients of the Ph.D and a Barra Sabbatical Fellowship to scholars on leave from a tenured or tenure-track faculty position. The application deadlines for the postdoctoral fellowships are typically in November for the Barra Postdoctoral Fellowship and December for the Barra Sabbatical Fellowship.
