Do You Hear What I Hear? Revival Poetry and the Formation
of the Evangelical Ear in Eighteenth-Century America

Wendy Roberts is a doctoral candidate at Northwestern University working on her dissertation, "Do You Hear What I Hear? Revival Poetry and the Formation of the Evangelical Ear in Eighteenth-Century America." She researches the ways that poetry helped to form religious hearing among eighteenth-century Evangelicals in the wake of Enlightenment pressures to silence God. Her project situates poetry in a nexus of other Evangelical practices, such as sermon listening, hymn meditation, preaching, itinerancy, and publishing.
