The Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship
Application deadline: 1 November 2002
The McNeil Center will appoint a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow for a two-year
term beginning 1 July 2003. The Mellon Fellow will receive a starting stipend
of $37,000, health insurance, a $2,500 annual research and travel allowance,
private office space in the Center's suite at the heart of the University
of Pennsylvania's historic campus, and library, computer, and other privileges
at the university. All McNeil Center fellows are expected to be in residence
during the academic year and to participate in the Center's program of
seminars and other activities. During the two-year term of appointment,
the Mellon Fellow will teach three courses in the University
of Pennsylvania History Department and will be mentored by a senior
member of the Penn faculty.
The remainder of the fellow’s time will be devoted to research and writing.
While this fellowship is particularly appropriate for projects designed
to turn a doctoral dissertation into a publishable monograph, any project
dealing with the histories and cultures of North America and the Caribbean
before 1850 will be considered. Proposals dependent on the use of Philadelphia-area
archives and libraries are particularly welcome. During or after the term
of appointment, the fellow may submit his or her manuscript for consideration
by the Center’s Early American
Studies series, published by the University
of Pennsylvania Press, but will be under no obligation to do so.
Applicants must have earned the PhD in American History or a closely
allied field no earlier than 1998 and must have the degree in hand when
the term of appointment commences.
