The McNeil Center offers several pre-doctoral dissertation fellowships each year; most are for a term of nine months, beginning 1 September. Advanced graduate students from any PhD-granting institution who are in the dissertation research or writing stage are eligible to compete for these fellowships, which are open to scholars in any discipline for projects focusing on North America and the Caribbean before 1850. Proposals reliant on research in Philadelphia-area archives and libraries are especially welcome. For details on fellowships and application instructions, click here. The Center also offers a two-year Barra Postdoctoral Fellowship, to recent recipients of a Ph.D and a Barra Sabbatical Fellowship to scholars on leave from a tenured or tenure-track faculty position. The online submission deadline for applications for the Barra Postdoctoral Fellowship for the term beginning 1 July 2024 is 3 November 2023.
